Making a Difference

Parents make a big difference with a hands-on approach to being involved in their child’s playing experience. But for some, the demands of work, raising other children, and obligations outside the lacrosse field can often limit that quality time with their lacrosse player. By working together and sharing responsibilities that enhance the sport, each family member has equal opportunity to be involved, engaged, and not feel overworked and under-appreciated come game day.

Volunteers at Third Annual Laxapalooza

Coach Matt, Board Member Chris Shmatovich, and Board Member Paul Sullivan are all volunteers at the Third Annual Laxapalooza

Before the games even begin, before the first official practice takes shape, parents can best support the club and their player by taking on off-season jobs within the club to help get everything in order. Here’s a small sample of the different volunteer jobs that can help the club during the off-season:

  • Laxapalooza Planning & Preparation
  • Equipment collection, inventory, repairs, and cleaning
  • Assist the Board with seeking team and club sponsors
  • Attend Board meetings and offer to assist when various tasks come about
  • Help collect, clean, repair, and store player equipment for sale at Laxapalooza and other swap opportunities

Helping out with finding team sponsors that contribute to prizes and promoting Chico Rebels is one of the many on-going volunteer positions needing to be filled.

As the season is gearing up and the club meeting takes place, volunteers can assist with some of these functions:

  • Assist with delivering equipment to practice fields
  • Assist with lining fields
  • Partner up with another family to serve as the team support leaders
  • Schedule parents and older siblings to attend practice for the younger teams in case of an emergency or to assist the coach with drills
  • Organize the first team meeting of the season
  • Research and prepare driving instructions to the various fields where games are scheduled
  • Contact hotels/motels in the general area of any tournament or game more than an hour’s driving time from Chico to arrange for discounted group rates to offer players, their family, and friends
  • Assist the board with seeking team and club sponsors
  • Collect and clean balls after practices and return them to the coach/equipment manager
  • Assisting public relations director with seeking advertisers for programs
  • Taking photos for team and club programs sales
Stats, Scores, Time Keeping, and Photographers

Stats, Scores, Time Keeping, and Photographers (in the background) are what keep our kids running strong and focused on the game.

Once the season is underway, volunteers are needed for all home games. Some of the jobs we need parent volunteers to fill are:

  • Serving as sideline manager
  • Score, Time, and Stats Keepers
  • Concession stand cashier
  • Concession stand stocker
  • Assist with setting up and tearing down concession stand
  • Water and snacks manager
  • Assist with lining fields, setting out goals, dropping balls onto end-zones and managing balls
  • Assisting with gathering club equipment and transporting it, when needed, to storage and/or another location
Helmets, Sticks, Heads, Gloves

Helmets, Sticks, Heads, Gloves… It Adds Up Fast!

Lacrosse is one of the most expensive sports and the rising fuel costs do not make it any easier for families. Together, working as a team both on and off the field, supporting the club at whole as well as each individual team, we make a noticeable difference in our player’s lives and set a tone for wherever life leads them. Be a team player and help out. The rewards of having your child get the most out of this sport is well worth it!
